THE AHLEFELDT BANNER

If you turn to look at the Gate Wing, you will see the banner of the Ahlefeldt family flying proudly above it. A banner – or “standard”, as it is also known – is a type of flag traditionally used by the cavalry. It is approximately a third of the size of a standard flag to make it easy to carry while on horseback.

“Ahlefeldt” is the name of an old family of nobles from Holstein, whose history can be traced back to around 1220. Members of the family held some of the highest positions of public office and titles in the service of the kings of Denmark and the Dukes of Schleswig. It is also the family name of the current Count Michael, whose family has lived at Egeskov since 1784.
