The Indestructible Reef – Alison Smith

Næsten alt hendes arbejde har en organisk form eller i det mindste en økologisk historie. Hendes interesse for forholdet mellem plastik og natur, da vi som samfund fortsætter med at bruge engangsplastik, og de bliver væk i vores økosystemer.

Alison Smith

Alison Smith er en Leeds-baseret kunstner, skaber og lærer. Smith skaber lysskulpturer og fordybende lysinstallationer, ofte ved hjælp af programmeret LED-belysning til at skabe animerede lyslandskaber. Smith arbejder med tekstilprocesser for at skabe flerlagede overflader med tekstur, ved at bruge for det meste genbrugsmaterialer, især plastemballage. Organiske former og teksturer, forhold mellem det syntetiske og det naturlige, livscyklusser og værdisystemer er centrale temaer, og Smith placerer ofte sine værker udendørs i naturlige omgivelser. Fremstilling og taktile processer er centrale i Smiths arbejde, og hun remixer og udvider ofte traditionelle håndværksprocesser, hun lærte under opvæksten i det landlige Yorkshire Dales.

Økologiske fortællinger er kernen i Smiths arbejde, og hun samarbejder ofte med forskere om at skabe værker, der adresserer ødelæggelsen af koralrev og tilbagegangen af insektpopulationer. Den seneste installation, Climate Canopy, udstillet på COP26, er udviklet i samarbejde med National Center for Atmospheric Science og fortolker 170 års klimadata som en fordybende lysskulptur.

Almost all of her work has an organic form or at least an ecological story. Her interest in the relationship between plastics and nature as we as a society continue to use disposable plastics and they get lost in our ecosystems.

The indestructible reef is made of trash and is crazy in a torn reef.

She’s also fascinated by the life cycles of things and plastic has a strange life cycle and I’m interested in that contrast with natural life cycles.

Alison Smith

Alison Smith is a Leeds-based artist, maker and teacher. Smith creates light sculptures and immersive light installations, often using programmed LED lighting to create animated light landscapes. Smith works with textile processes to create multi-layered surfaces with texture, using mostly recycled materials, particularly plastic packaging. Organic forms and textures, relationships between the synthetic and the natural, life cycles and value systems are central themes, and Smith often places his works outdoors in natural environments. Making and tactile processes are central to Smith’s work, and she often remixes and extends traditional craft processes she learned growing up in rural Yorkshire Dales.

Ecological narratives are at the heart of Smith’s work, and she often collaborates with scientists to create works that address the destruction of coral reefs and the decline of insect populations. The most recent installation, Climate Canopy, exhibited at COP26, was developed in collaboration with the National Center for Atmospheric Science and interprets 170 years of climate data as an immersive light sculpture.

In addition to her artistic practice, Smith is Engagement Curator at the Henry Moore Institute in Leeds, where she develops and implements programs to engage the public in contemporary sculpture.
