Dresses – Tae Gon Kim

Anvendte materialer: fiberoptik, lysgenerator (LED), videoprojektor, dvd-afspiller

“I want to be the other, I want him to be me, as if we were united, locked in the same bag of skin, the robe being only the smooth shell of this confluent matter from which my conceptions of love are built. “Roland Barthes

Fragment of a love speech

As soon as I became interested in this text about love relationships, I wanted to realize this project.  When we love someone soulfully, we want to be them, to merge with them. So this work imagines us becoming the one we love. Fiberglass dresses are designed to fit multiple people. The shape of the garment itself preserves and testifies to the traces of a relationship and at the same time invites us to participate in this relationship by fitting it ourselves. The object thus invites the amorous intimacy of those who wear it.

Its forms coincide with ours, embrace us. An image, a possible reflection of what we want to become, is projected onto the clothes by three video projectors. The clothes and their material transport us to the inside of the image, as if we were clothed in our desires. This jewel of images, by the way, is destined to evolve according to our desires. Looking at the reflections of the pictures, you have the feeling that each of the garments on display tells its own story…. Since this idea came to me, I wanted to create a work about these dresses. Because each dress has its own story, I wanted to put three dresses together.

These dresses tell different stories through the different images used. In my work, each fiberglass dress is illuminated by different colored lights representing the different stories, and these lights change very slowly, as if each dress tells its own story and that story evolves over time. When the dresses are put together in this way, they shine all the more.

Materials used: fiber optics, light generator (LED), video projector, DVD player
